Mr. Osamu Tomita, a renowned Japanese blacksmith, is well known for crafting traditional Higonokami folding knives. He works in a small workshop near the city of Miki, where he hand-forges each knife himself.

A hallmark of Mr. Tomita’s Higonokami knives is the use of Shirogami #2 (White Paper Steel) for the blade, achieving a hardness of approximately 61–62 HRC. The handle is forged from soft iron and features a distinctive hammered pattern (Tsuchime).

Typical dimensions include a blade length of 75 mm, total open length of 174 mm, and a weight of around 90 grams.

Sadly, Mr. Osamu Tomita has passed away, making the knives he handcrafted increasingly rare and highly collectible. While some stores still offer original Higonokami knives made by Mr. Tomita, availability is extremely limited.

Today, many knives are produced in the Higonokami style, resembling his signature craftsmanship. However, authentic knives made by Mr. Tomita himself can be identified by his signature and personal seal included inside the box. (See image below)

Higonokami knife is a traditional Japanese folding knife that first appeared in 1896. One of its defining characteristics is the absence of a complex locking mechanism; the blade is held open by applying pressure with the thumb on the tang of the blade (chikiri). The traditional handle is typically made from a stamped sheet of metal, usually brass, although some modern versions may feature premium materials such as wood or carbon fiber.

Owning a Higonokami knife crafted by Mr. Tomita Osamu is not only about possessing a high-quality tool, but also about holding a piece of Japan’s cultural heritage and traditional knife-making artistry.
